New advisory committee on near campus neighbourhoods holds inaugural meeting.

The Near Campus Neighbourhoods Advisory Committee met for its inaugural meeting on Wednesday, October 5. Membership includes representation from the neighbourhood associations of King's Town, Portsmouth, Sydenham and Williamsville districts, the Kingston Rental Properties Owners' Association, student bodies and organizations from both St. Lawrence College and Queen's, and a member of the Queen's University administration.

I have been elected the chair, and John Grenville of the Williamsville Association is the vice chair. Kingston's Chief Administrative Officer, Gerard Hunt, expressed his intention to attend the meetings regularly, and to ensure the necessary staff support is provided.

At the first meeting members were invited to identify concerns. These will be collated and organized into groups as appropriate, and then presented to the committee with the necessary supporting staff briefings to provide background to the issues raised. That seems to me to be a very good beginning for the committee towards determining priorities, future considerations and steps which might be useful.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, November 2 at 5:30pm, probably in the Council Chamber at City Hall.

I would welcome your comments and ideas on what you see as priorities for this Committee.
